A TALE OF POWER AND WATER

Traveling by air on a budget is a tale told in power and water. What I mean by this is that discount airlines try to make up the difference between themselves and the big boys by removing some basics and over charging you on others. That many airports raise the prices on any and everything that they can get away with in an all out money grab from those who are prisoners of circumstance.

The basic that they will most likely remove is power. You will not be able to plug in any of your devices on the plane. There are no jacks available except in first class and any frontier passenger will tell you that first class is located on a better plane than they have.

What you are going to need is at least one power power bank with you. After all, keeping your phone charged is important while traveling. You need that phone at full strength. That phone probably has your schedule on it. Have all of your contacts when you land on it. If you are running for the car or shuttle service you do not have time to plug in at an alien airport. Some of these airports are ancient and you will have to wander for a while to find a powerstation. I was in Houston and they wanted a credit card for a ten minute charge. That is crazy.

So what I am saying is go to a discount store or Walmart and pick up a portable power supply. You can get a good one for under ten dollars. This ten bucks will be well spent because you are saving yourself, if nothing else, time and time is everything.

    Now let’s discuss water.

Nothing tastes as bad to me as a five dollar bottle of water. A dollar at the corner store. Five dollars in the airport and you will need to use a credit card on the plane.

Why pay this when they have bottle refill stations at most airports?

Bring a small empty bottle. Carry in through inspection and on the other side you can refill for free. The rules allow for this so do not worry.

But it is only a few bucks, what is the big deal?

While traveling you will quickly discover that all of those nickels dimes and quarters add up quickly. You will want to save as much as you can in the areas that you have control over. Power and water are two such areas. Just because you may be on a vacation this does not mean you will magically be able to come up with more money in a pinch.

You had to plan and save to be able to afford your vacation. The planning and saving does not end when you walk into an airport or hit the road. To be a competent traveler we must develop habits that become automatic.

So the little things like planning ahead for the times that we will need a power supply and cannot access one easily is one of them. Being cost conscious of something as minor as the cost of bottled water is another.

If you wish to spend freely when you reach your final destination then you will need to save as much as possible before then.
